I know I’m not the only one who was excited when Threads was launched in early 2024 by Meta, but even I couldn’t have predicted how impactful it would be to small businesses, service providers, and yes, podcasters.
There was a lot of skepticism at first — for example, many were worried it would gain popularity and then drop off, like Clubhouse. Everyone was pretty much proven wrong (for now) as it’s been a while since then and Threads is still popular, active, and perfect for improving your visibility online.
Since it’s so good for visibility, it’s one of the platforms I suggest you check out. But, I wouldn’t recommend it without giving you a good reason — so here’s why you should be using Threads as a podcaster:
As always, you can listen to the corresponding podcast episode from the Moms Who Podcast show here:
Threads is a recently released social media platform created by Meta that can connect or link to your Instagram (although that’s not required). For example, if you have a blue “verified” checkmark on your Instagram, it carries over to your Threads account.
It’s a more text-based app — I would compare it to what Twitter used to be — and a “thread” is the post you create and the posts you respond to. Rather than short-form videos and carousels, there’s a lot of sharing thoughts, and feelings and starting conversations.
That’s not to say you can’t post a video (you can), but I don’t think I will be — and most of my content is video/audio (my podcast, the Moms Who Podcast show).
You can like and respond to comments and threads, but you can’t DM (direct message) anyone on the platform, you have to head back over to Instagram to do that. But your profile still has your bio and a link to your website and you can publish live links, too.
One of the coolest things about Threads is the connections being made. Unlike other social media platforms, you see both the people you currently follow — but you also get plenty of content based on your interests (and they find you through theirs). It’s just one big conversation.
And that really ties into how you’re going to use Threads to market your business and your podcast — without feeling “salesy” or “sleazy” because we don’t want that. The solution is not to treat it like a strategy.
Threads work because you get to build a personal connection with your audience there. For example, my audience is busy moms who want to start a podcast, and trust me, there are tons of busy moms on there who have similar experiences, thoughts, and beliefs as me, and Threads connects them to me and me to them.
When they feel connected or aligned with something I share — podcast-related or otherwise — they connect, hit follow, and have even booked without me directly promoting my show, services, or offers.
It’s all about building a real connection and letting it organically come over to sales (and if it doesn’t, then remember these are your referral partners, they’re new “rooms” that you’ve been introduced to).
Of course, you’ll need to set up a Threads account for your business (you don’t really need a separate account for your podcast like you don’t need a second Instagram account for it either). Then start by spending 5-10 minutes a day on the platform.
Publish a few posts, connect and engage with others, and just explore what it has to offer. If you feel like it’s something you’d love to do, stick around. If not, there’s no pressure to hop on the bandwagon, instead focus on the platforms you do enjoy showing up on!
And if you need help with your podcast — starting it, growing it, or getting unstuck — reach out, and let’s work together, I’d love to hear from you!
